InPrint magazine 3rd issue: IMPACT
Editorial design for InPrint magazine's 3rd annual issue, IMPACT.
IMPACT highlights the issue of sustainability which ranges from the economic efficiency of capitalism to the growing concerns of environmental changes. For this year's issue, I designed a spread for Dee Dee Yang, an MFA student studying Textiles and Fashion Design at UC Davis. Dee Dee discusses how her Hmong-American identity influences her designs. With her research questions in mind, "How can we value cultural textiles? And how do we value clothing that is produced by hand?"; Dee Dee shares her perspectives on the fast fashion industry and aspires to educate people on Hmong batik material culture.

Layout Development
According to the article, Dee Dee mentions that from Hmong culture, Batik (textile techniques/ a specific surface design) was a way for women to tell their story. Also, Batik was considered to be a hidden language for the Hmong. I incorporated her Batik patterns as a main design element of the spread to represent the hidden language in a visual way.
Digital Iterations
With a provided color scheme I transferred rough sketches to digital rendering. I played around with the placement of different colors and patterns in order to visualize the possible look of the layout.
I divided the whole layout into different sections to in order to convey the look of a quilt. Each section contains different contents such as title, subhead, pull quote, photos of Dee Dee and her different Batik patterns.
With Dee Dee's approval I was able to get the images of the Batik pattern she designed. I transferred the images on Illustrator and traced with a pen tool to create digital version for the spread.
